Globalization And The Effect On The Stand Your Ground Law And Gun Laws There are many perspectives on globalization. Some people support the concept while others are against globalization. Through discussing globalization, its relationship to the Stand Your Ground gun law, we can better understand how globalization affects the world socially, introduce solutions and evaluate their effectiveness. Before analyzing globalization I thought that it was the trade between countries. Later on I learned that globalization is far more complex. “Globalization is a name for the process of increasing the connectivity and interdependence of the worlds markets and business” ("Globalization." What Is ? Definition and Meaning. Web. 23 May 2012). This means that globalization has boosted the interaction between countries therefore allowing businesses in other countries to communicate more easily . This shows how globalization connects finances of countries all over the world. Technology has helped advance globalization in the last two decades. “This process has speeded up dramatically in the last two decades, as technological advances make it easier for people to travel ,communicate and do business internationally. The major recent driving forces are advances in telecommunications infrastucture and the rise of the internet” ("Globalization." What Is ? Definition and Meaning. Web. 23 May 2012). Globalization has greatly benifitted from the advances in technology because people are now able to travel to other countries and interact or they can simply interact through the internet.
Globalization has increased the competition among countries and has created groups that support the concept and others that are against globalization. “In general, as economies become more connected to other economies, they have increased opportunities but also increased competition. Thus as globalization becomes a more and more common feature of world economics powerful pro globalization and anti globalization lobbies have risen” ("Globalization." What Is ? Definition and Meaning. Web. 23 May 2012.) Before globalization became popular their was not much competition, however as globalization began to spread the compettition began to spread primarily because factories in some countries are more developed than others . Globalization also contributes to an increased gap amongst the rich and poor. “ Critics of globalization say that it weakens national sovereignty and allows rich nations to ship domestic jobs overseas where labor is much cheaper”(Mourdoukoutas, Panos. "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Side of Globalization." Forbes. Forbes Magazine, 10 Sept. 2011. Web. 23 May 2012. ). This means that people who oppose globalization believe that globilization decreases a nation’s ability to decide for themselves . An example of this can be seen through a clothing store company like The Gap who employs factory workers in Vietnam because the labor is cheap which shows that wealthier countries exploit poorer countries. People who are anti-globalization also believe that globalization makes the rich richer and the poor poorer. For example, “for business leaders and the economic elite ,globalization is good. Cheaper labor overseas enables them to build production facilities in locations where labor and health care costs are low, and then sell the finished goods in locations where wages are high”(Legal Community Against Violence. "Gun Violence Statistics." LCAV -. Web. 23 May,2012). Futhermore, this explains how shoe manfacturing company Nike employs people in poorer countries where the workers are paid very low wages, while the company profit millions. Not all are against globalization, “Proponents of globalization says that it helps developing nations ‘catch up’ to industrialized nations much faster through increased employment and technological advances”(Legal Community Against Violence. "Gun Violence Statistics." LCAV -. Web. 23 May,2012). This means that globalization helps poor countries increase wealth by providing jobs and giving undeveloped countries technology in order to have the tools needed to survive or be able to compete in this era of globalization.
Globalization impacts the Stand Your Ground Law because it legally allows firearms into the hands of the public, which can include murderers and irresponsible people. Klingaman, states, “It’s not gun nuts that bother me. It’s the nuts with guns” (Klingaman, 2012). This explains that it is not necessarily the guns that scare people, it is who uses them and for what purpose. An example of those who have caused harm using firearms can be a terrorist. “Before the era of globalization, terrorists were limited to using ‘Browning Revolvers,’ such as pistols” (The Under World :Irish Organized Crime In Boston , 2009). Through an increase in technology and communication through globalization, an increase in the activity of the arms trade has resulted (The Under World :Irish Organized Crime In Boston , 2009). This explains how globalization has given criminals the access to dangerous advance weapons that were not available before.
Globalization has increased the level of illegal firearms. The contribution of illegal and legal guns have a negative effect on society, where “guns increase the probability of death in incidents of domestic violence, raises the likelihood of fatalities by those who intend to injure others and among those who attempt suicide, places children and young people at special risk, and disproportionately affects communities of color” (Legal Community Against Violence. "Gun Violence Statistics." LCAV -. Web. 23 May,2012). Guns contribute negatively to society because they increase the chances of death in abusive relationships . “Fire arms were used to kill more than two - thirds of spouse and ex-spouse homicide victims between 1990 and 2005..... Abused women are five times more likely to be killed by their abuser if the the abuser owns a fire arm”(Legal Community Against Violence. "Gun Violence Statistics." LCAV -. Web. 23 May,2012). This quote explains that for 10 years sixty six percent of married or non -married women in abusive relationships with men who own guns were more than likely to be killed by the firearm simply because it was available to the abuser.
Guns also contribute to society negatively because their availibility increases the chances that someone will commit murder. Easy access to guns also increases the amount of suicides. “Over fity percent of all suicides are committed with a firearm” (Legal Community Against Violence. "Gun Violence Statistics." LCAV -. Web. 23 May,2012). This means that half of the people that killed themselves between the years 2004 and 2009 killed themselves with guns. In 2009 in America the number of murders plus the number of people taking their own lives plus the numbers of shootings caused by law enforcement equaled 31,347 deaths (Legal Community Against Violence. "Gun Violence Statistics." LCAV -. Web. 23 May,2012). This means that there could have been 85 deaths in 24 hours 3 deaths every 60 minutes.
People of color appear to be disproportionately affected by the increase in the circulation of firearms due to globalization. “Fire arm homicides is the leading cause of death for African Americans... African Americans make up nearly 13% of the the U.S population,But in2009 Suffered Almost 24% of all firearm deaths and over 54% of all firearm homicides”(Legal Community Against Violence. "Gun Violence Statistics." LCAV -. Web. 23 May, 2012). This evidence explains how the percentage of african american americans who die from firearm deaths is higher than the rest of the population.
As a nationwide community we cannot continue to allow firearms to be distributed so easily. Therefore, we need to encourage those who can help change globalization to ensure that guns are distributed to law enforcements and militaries only. So who do everyday citizens address to make sure this happens ? We address the United Nations. According to dictionary.com the UN is a “international organization composed of most of the countries of the world. It was founded in 1945 to promote peace, security, and economic development’("United Nations." The Free Dictionary. Farlex. Web. 24 May 2012.) . So since guns are affecting our communities negatively the UN needs to establish a law that states :That only law enforcement officials and military chiefs within each country can trade firearms . That way we ensure that the guns are put in the hands of the correct people and if not we know who to blame and punish. Globalization negatively affects the stand your ground law and gun laws because it allows acces on a higher level which destroys communities.Having unlimited access to firearms leads to increases in murders and unintentional deaths
This video explains how before the stand your law was inacted there was a debate on whether or not this law was going to promote racially motivated killings.Despite the concern the law was still enacted.
